Cardinals Split Shutouts in Doubleheader at Roosevelt

CHICAGO – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split its Friday doubleheader at Roosevelt, cruising to an 11-0 victory in the opener before falling 1-0 in the nightcap at Ozinga Field. Game two was the first time the Cardinals (24-23, 10-12 GLIAC) were shutout in 2026.

Game One: Cardinals 11, Lakers 0 (7-innings)

Saginaw Valley struck early and often in the opener, scoring four runs in the first and four more in the second to seize complete control.

In the first, Ryan Jarvis (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS) delivered an RBI single up the middle before Aaron Bess (Boyne City, Mich. / Boyne City HS) worked a bases-loaded walk. Connor Cornwell (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Henry Ford II HS) followed with a two-run single to cap the four-run frame and put the Cardinals ahead 4-0.

The Cardinals added four more in the second. Jarvis singled home two runs, Cornwell drove in another on a fielder's choice, and Jack Sequin (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) added an RBI single as the lead ballooned to 8-0.

SVSU tacked on two more in the fifth behind Sequin's RBI single and Austin Cicerone's (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) sacrifice fly. Chase Miller (Walkerton, Ind. / John Glenn HS) later tripled and scored on a balk in the seventh to cap the scoring at 11-0.

Jarvis finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, Cornwell drove in three, and Sequin added two RBI as the Cardinals totaled 14 hits.

On the mound, Dan Wilcome (Cheboygan, Mich. / Cheboygan Area HS), Nathan Masar (W, 5-3) (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek HS), and Steve Getts (Walled Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) combined on a five-hit shutout. Masar earned the win with three scoreless innings, and the staff struck out eight while not allowing a run.

Game Two: Cardinals 0, Lakers 1

The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel as the Cardinals went from 14 hits in seven innings to four hits in nine innings.

Roosevelt pushed across the lone run in the first inning on an RBI single after a hit-by-pitch and walk set the table.

Saginaw Valley had opportunities but could not break through as the Cardinals put runners aboard in multiple innings, including a seventh-inning chance when Brady Carpenter (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but the rally stalled. Carpenter also reached in the ninth as the tying runner and made it to second on a passed ball with two outs.

Brady Young (L, 3-1) (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg HS) was sharp despite taking the loss, allowing one run over five innings while striking out six. Will Juday (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central HS) followed with three scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and keeping SVSU within one.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley baseball concludes the 2026 regular season Saturday, May 2 with a doubleheader against Roosevelt. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM ET at Ferrell Field in Chicago, Illinois. With the win in game one, the Cardinals hopped Parkside in the GLIAC standings and have a half of a game lead on the Rangers. SVSU can clinch the fourth seed in the GLIAC tournament with one win over their final two games or if UWP loses their final game on Saturday to Grand Valley State.
