DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped the series finale at No. 21 Wayne State on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-2 at Harwell Field. The Cardinals (18-16, 8-8 GLIAC) drop their first series of the year and get ready for their final five home games of the season this week.
Saginaw Valley struck first in the opening inning. Aaron Bess (Boyne City, Mich. / Boyne City HS) worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and came around to score when Buck Snabes (Rochester, Mich. / Rochester Adams HS) singled to center field and advanced to second on a fielding error, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The hit extends Snabes hitting streak to 23 games.
Wayne State evened the score in the second on an RBI single before SVSU regained the advantage in the third. Bess launched a solo home run to center field to put the Cardinals back in front with his team-leading fifth home run of the year.
The Warriors answered in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. The contest remained knotted until the sixth inning when Wayne State broke it open. An RBI groundout plated one run before an RBI single made it 4-2. Two more runs were brought in on a triple to double the lead.
Ryan Jarvis (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS) and Lucas Mead (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin HS) each recorded doubles for Saginaw Valley, while Austin Cicerone (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) also added a two-bagger as part of the Cardinals' seven-hit effort. Bess finished 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI, and two runs scored. Mead walked after Bess's home run in the third to extend his on-base streak to 31 games.
On the mound, Will Juday (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central HS) started and allowed one run over two innings. Jack Sequin (L, 4-3) (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) took the loss after working four innings, and Evan Woodward (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek HS) tossed two scoreless frames with four strikeouts in relief.
