CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split its Monday doubleheader with Davenport at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, falling 7-3 in game one before walking off the Panthers (16-19, 8-4 GLIAC) 8-7 in 10 innings in game two to earn a 2-2 series split. The Cardinals (16-13, 7-5 GLIAC) were outhit 24-13 overall but worked 15 walks including 11 in game two.
Game One: Cardinals 3, Panthers 7 (7-innings)
Saginaw Valley struck first in the second inning. Mitchell Walters (Shepherd, Mich. / Shepherd HS) reached on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Chase Miller (Walkerton, Ind. / John Glenn HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring him home for a 1-0 lead.
Davenport responded in the third and then broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits, including a two-run home run from Dylan Pawenski, to take a 6-1 advantage.
The Cardinals chipped away in the sixth. Buck Snabes (Rochester, Mich. / Rochester Adams HS) singled, and Jacob Pitt (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central HS) followed with a base hit before Brady Carpenter (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) lined a two-run single up the middle to cut the deficit to 7-3. However, SVSU could not get closer, finishing with five hits in the contest.
Jack Sequin (L, 4-2) (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) took the loss, allowing six runs over 3.2 innings. Brayden Simmon (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) and Evan Woodward (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek HS) combined for 3.1 innings of relief, with Woodward allowing just one run over the final three frames.
Easton Remick (W, 3-3) pitched 5.2 innings for Davenport in the start and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks. Brayden Flanders recorded two outs on three batters faced before Brandon Skorupski (Sv, 2) shut the door by retiring the two batters he faced.
Game Two: Cardinals 8, Panthers 7 (10-innings)
The nightcap delivered late drama. The Cardinals erupted for four runs in the second inning. Aaron Bess (Boyne City, Mich. / Boyne City HS) singled home a run, Lucas Mead (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin HS) drew a bases-loaded walk, and Ryan Jarvis (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS) ripped a two-run single to left-center to give SVSU a 4-0 cushion.
Davenport trimmed the lead and then surged ahead with a five-run eighth inning highlighted by a three-run triple from Pawenski. Saginaw Valley answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Miller doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and later scored when Mead delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
The Panthers pushed across a run in the top of the 10th to take a 7-6 lead, but the Cardinals had one more response. Miller singled and advanced into scoring position before Mead was hit by a pitch and Jarvis walked to load the bases. Snabes brought home the tying run on an infield single, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. The hit kept the bases loaded with one out as Pitt stepped in and delivered the final blow. Miller sparked the offense from the bottom of the order, going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and a double. Jarvis drove in three, Mead added two RBI and scored the winning run, and Pitt collected the game-winning hit. The Cardinals worked 11 walks and stole seven bases to improve to 99 of 117 on stolen base attempts. The team inches closer to the single-season stolen base record of 115 and stolen base attempts of 148, both set back in 1987.
On the mound, Sam Briggs (Linwood, Mich. / Standish HS) tossed five strong innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Dan Wilcome (Cheboygan, Mich. / Cheboygan Area HS) battled through four innings of relief, and Will Juday (W, 1-0) (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central HS) earned the win after closing out the 10th inning.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley has a day off before heading down to Utica, Michigan on Wednesday, April 8. The Cardinals host Tiffin at UWM Field, the site of the 2026 GLIAC Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
