Sequin Leads Cardinals in Series Finale

HAMMOND, Ind. – Saginaw Valley State University baseball wrapped up their first GLIAC series on Sunday with a victory at Purdue Northwest. The Cardinals (12-9, 3-1 GLIAC) took the finale 5-3 to win the series 3-1 against the Pride (6-11, 1-3 GLIAC).

Jack Sequin (W, 4-1) (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) threw 8.0 innings in the start, allowing three runs on six hits, three walks, and struck out five. Evan Woodward (Sv, 1) (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek HS) got his first career save, striking out one in the ninth.

Aaron Bess (Boyne City, Mich. / Boyne City HS) was the lone Cardinal with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Lucas Mead (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin HS) led the team in runs scored in his 1-for-3 performance with a walk, two stolen bases, and two runs. Ryan Jarvis (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS) drove in a pair to lead the team and scored a run with two stolen bases.

Saginaw Valley got on the board in the first as they did in every game of the series. Mead walked and stole second before Jarvis drove him in with a single to center field. Jarvis later scored on an RBI single by Austin Cicerone (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) to put SVSU ahead 2-0.

PNW put up two runs of their own in the fourth to tie the game, but the Cardinals responded instantly. Bess led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Mead. Mead stole second to put two in scoring position with no outs. Both runners came into score over the next two at-bats with a Jarvis RBI groundout and an RBI sacrifice fly by Buck Snabes (Rochester, Mich. / Rochester Adams HS).

After a few scoreless innings, the Pride cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Saginaw Valley had the response in the ninth to reclaim the two-run lead. Jacob Pitt (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central HS) pinch hit and hit a solo home run, his second of the season, to add insurance.

Woodward took over in the ninth and shut the door, allowing one runner on a hit-by-pitch who was stranded at second.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley comes home for the first time of 2026 and welcomes Parkside for a four-game series. The Cardinals and Rangers are set for a 3:00 PM first pitch on Friday, March 27. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday before the finale on Sunday.
