Women’s Soccer has Five Named All-GLIAC

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State women's soccer had five student-athletes named to All-GLIAC teams when the league announced the postseason awards on Thursday afternoon.

Second year Abby Ellis (Waterford, Mich., Waterford Mott HS) and third year Emily Kolodin (Grand Blanc, Mich., Grand Blanc HS) were listed on the All-GLIAC First Team as a forward and midfielder, respectively.

"We are extremely proud to have Abby Ellis and Emily Kolodin earn first-team all-conference honors," said SVSU head women's soccer coach Tyler Channell. "It is well deserved for both of them as each game they're consistently the top attacking players on the field in every game we play. Abby has been able to get towards the top of the GLIAC in goals, and points. Emily has led the league in assists in back-to-back seasons also breaking the single season assist program record. They both have allowed us to have one of the highest-octane attacks in the league and deserve all of the awards they get."

Fourth year Ryleigh Gray (Belle River, Ontario, E.J. Lajeunesse) was on the Second Team as a defender. She was joined by fellow fourth year Kylie Cesarek (Macomb, Mich., Dakota HS), who made the squad as an at-large. Fourth year Peyton Kennedy (Saginaw, Mich., Heritage HS) was the Cardinals' member on the Honorable Mention list.
SVSU women's soccer finished the regular season 10-6-2, 11-6-2 after win over Northern Michigan on Tuesday, and an 8-4-2 mark in conference play. The Cardinals boast the third best scoring offense in the GLIAC with 1.84 goals per game while holding opponents to 1.05 scores to tie for fourth in that category.

Ellis leads the team in scoring with 18 points, goals scored with eight, and shots on goal with 27. She is tied with five other GLIAC athletes for the most game-winning goals this season with three. She ranks third in the league in goals scored, fourth in points, and fifth in SOG.

Kolodin is second on the team with 17 points, including a program season record 13 assists that she broke on October 25 against Wayne State. She leads the GLIAC in assists, holding four more than the next highest conference competitor. Nationally, she is fifth in total assists and sixth in assists per game (0.68). The Grand Blanc native has had four games with two or more assists, with her best performance coming at Purdue Northwest on October 4 when she dished an assist on all three SVSU goals.

Gray has anchored the Cardinals defense that has limited opponents' chances and held them to scoring just over one goal per game. She has also contributed offensively with two assists and her first goal of the season in the 2-1 win over NMU on Tuesday. The game-winning tally came in the 57th minute of play and put the Cards up 2-0 over the Wildcats.

Cesarek is fourth on the team in points with 11. She has scored five goals and registered one assist so far this season. Her season-best performance came early when she scored a brace against Walsh, including the game-winning goal.

Kennedy has been another foundational member of the SVSU defense this season. Her timely tackles have halted scoring opportunities all season and have been a major factor in the Cardinal defense ranking top five in scoring this season. She earned her first point of the season in the 2-1 win over NMU in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals with an assist in Gray's game-winning goal in the second half.

The Cardinals defeated Northern Michigan, 2-1 in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday and advanced to the Semifinals to face host Grand Valley State this Friday, November 6 at 1 p.m., in Allendale, Michigan.
