Cardinals Fall to Northern Michigan

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University lacrosse team suffered a 20-1 loss to Northern Michigan early Sunday afternoon at Braddock Field. The Cardinals (0-6, 0-2 GLIAC) scored a goal at the 12:50 mark of the second quarter by Annelle Dykema that trimmed the Wildcats' (6-3, 1-0 GLIAC) lead to 6-1.

Mikaila Stone (L, 0-6) made nine saves between the pipes for SVSU. She also led the team in ground balls with seven. Sarah Veale tallied six ground balls and four draw controls on the afternoon. Sarah Graziano and Veale led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers.

Northern Michigan hopped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes of play. NMU tallied all three of its free-position scores in the first quarter while outshooting SVSU 12-2.

Dykema's goal was the first score of the second quarter and cut the deficit to five goals, but SVSU would be stopped in the team's final two shots on frame in the game. The Wildcats scored the same amount in the second to move to a 12-1 advantage at the half.

Veale had two scoring opportunities in the third, but NMU's goalkeeper saved those attempts to hold the Cardinals to just one point.

Northern Michigan added four goals in the final two quarters to give the game's final result.
