Cardinals Drop Home Opener Against Dominican

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University lacrosse team suffered a 21-3 defeat to undefeated Dominican on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals (0-4) scored three goals on seven shots and scooped up 25 ground balls in the contest.

SVSU saw goals from Sarah Veale, Kendall Szlachta, and Annelle Dykema. Mikaila Stone (L, 0-4) made 12 saves in net and also led the Cardinals in ground balls with 14. Veale added three draw controls and two shots to her single-goal stat line.

The Penguins (6-0) tallied four straight goals in the opening six minutes of play to hop out to a quick lead. Veale netted her only score of the game at the 9:18 mark of the first quarter to put the score at 4-1. Dominican would net two more before the end of the frame to hold a 6-1 advantage going into the second.

Szlachta added her first goal as a Cardinal with 6:56 left in the first half in a man-up situation. Dykema recorded the lone assist for SVSU on that play. Dominican tallied five goals before the break to hold an 11-2 advantage when the teams went into the locker room.

Dykema prevented a scoreless second half with the game's final goal at 2:16 in the fourth quarter, scoring on a free position attempt.

Saginaw Valley State finished the game 10-21 in clear attempts, 12 saves, seven draw controls, seven shots, and was 1-3 in free position shots.

UP NEXT: The Cardinal lacrosse team will take a week off before returning to the field on Friday, March 21, against Concordia-St. Paul. The game against the Golden Bears will be the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest in program history, and it will start at noon.
