Cardinals Close Regular Season With Sweep of Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Closing-out the 2018 regular season at home, the SVSU Softball team posted a sweep over Wayne State University on Sunday at the SVSU Softball Complex. The Cardinals defeated the Warriors 2-1 in eight innings with a walk-off home run and continued to claim the second game by a 5-1 count.

Saginaw Valley enters the annual postseason tournament with a 25-23 overall record and a 16-14 mark in the GLIAC. Wayne State finished its season with an overall mark of 24-25 and 9-19 league record, coming up short of qualifying for the tournament.

Game 1

Wayne State held a 1-0 lead that began in the 4th and held true until the Cardinals came up in the bottom of the 7th. SVSU tied the game when Evy Lobdell hit a ball off the very top of the center field fence, scoring Courtney Reeves to push the game to extra-innings.

After holding the Warriors scoreless, Lauren Bachert stepped up to the plate first for SVSU in the bottom of the 8th. She deposited a long home run to left field, supplying a walk-off win for the home squad.

Bachert was 2-4 with the game-winning home run and a run scored. Lobdell was 1-3 with the game-tying RBI. Reeves had a double for SV.

Mikayla Alexandrou (8-8) got the win, working all 8.0 innings. She allowed just a single run despite nine hits, striking-out three and walking one.

Game 2

The second contest saw WSU take an early 1-0 lead but Saginaw Valley responded with a run in the 2nd, three in the 5th and another in the 6th for a 5-1 lead. That is what the final score proved to be.

Lobdell and Aubree Mouthaan each had a solo home run in the game while Lobdell added a double as well. Bachert and Julia Miller had the other RBI for the Cardinals.

Anna Conard (12-6) got the win, allowing a single run on three hits. She had a strikeout as well.
