UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Following a 5-5 record in the 2016 season, the Saginaw Valley State University football team hosted its annual Spring Game at Wickes Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The defense and offense competed against each other in the annual contest, with the defensive unit edging out a 68-52 victory thanks to four turnovers.
The defense started the early scoring, as the unit would notch points off of a pair of three and outs early in the first quarter. The group would stay consistent with its pressure all afternoon, eventually creating the first turnover of the game from a botched snap that was downed in the red zone.
After one quarter, the defense was locked in on the offense and were ahead 12-0 on the scoreboard.
The offense would then find its groove in the second quarter. A first down run from Jacob LeClair put the team on the board for the first time. The Cardinals offense continued to run the ball well during this time, as Tommy Scott, Jr., Myrick El, Jr. and Josh Holton received the main portion of the first-team carries.
Yet, it was a 25-yd strike from LeClair to Chad Gailliard that netted the game's first touchdown for either side. The PAT was good, and the offense only trailed 12-10 in the middle of the 2nd quarter. With the offense looking for the lead, Dillon Dixon prevented that by notching the defense six points with an interception.
The interception was quickly erased, however, as Donovan Stewart connected with Michael King for a 28-yard touchdown pass that made the score 40-24 heading to half.
The Cardinals' depth was on display for most of the second half. The defense continued to make strong plays throughout the half and would force two more turnovers. After allowing touchdowns on the outer routes earlier, the defense adjusted as Brad Tabor picked off Jake Baldwin in the third quarter.
Interceptions from Saint Evans and Aaron Berry highlighted the points scoring for the defense in the fourth quarter. The offense found a late surge of energy from Adam McCann and Bruce Mann, who each scored touchdowns for the unit. McCann scored after picking up a 38-yard gain a few plays earlier.
Mann played well for his first spring game, finding Kaleb Younger for the TD pass late in the fourth. The intensity remained as the clocks waned to zero and the defense came away with the 68-52 victory over the offense in the 2017 SVSU Football Spring Game.

SVSU Football continues with its spring workouts and the preparations for the start to the 2017 season in the Fall. The Cardinals will begin the campaign on the road, squaring off with Alderson-Broaddus University on Sept. 2 in Philippi, W. Va. Kickoff is at Noon.
