SVSU Athletics hosts first-ever 5th Year Cardinal Club Reception

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Athletic Department hosted its first-ever 5th Year Cardinal Club Reception on Thursday, April 20. The event, which was sponsored by Meemic Insurance Thomson Agency, LLC, brought together Cardinal student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility in a new initiative.

The 5th Year Club was established by the department for all student-athletes whose playing careers are over, and the purpose of the club is to reinforce the department's commitment to the Cardinal student-athletes and make sure they know that they will be supported academically, socially, professionally and in any other way needed throughout their careers.

Former SVSU Men's Soccer student-athlete Zach Myers spoke to the group on his experience and how it has developed into him being the Marketing Manager for SVSU Dining Services. SVSU Executive Director of Alumni Relations Jim Dwyer also spoke to the group and explained his experience as a freshman. He stressed the importance of finishing your degree and the need to remain a part of the SVSU Athletics Family.

Former student-athletes Shelby Weeks and Matt McKoy, who finished their eligibility this academic year, talked to the amount of support they received throughout their careers at SVSU and just how much of a family atmosphere there is.

SVSU Athletic Director Mike Watson and Associate Athletic Director / SWA closed with remarks on their pleasure of being a huge part of the student-athletes' careers and progression through the years.

"We established the 5th Year Cardinal Club to really help our student-athletes understand the importance of knowing that we are always here for them," stated SVSU Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Academic Services Nedra Brown. "We have been a huge part of these student-athletes' lives and really want to remain in touch with them throughout their careers. The support they receive will guide them through to finishing their degrees and helping get set-up for much success in their professional lives!"
