ORLANDO, Fla. - The SVSU women's tennis team claimed a 7-2 victory over Minnesota State-Mankato in the Cardinals' inaugural match at the USTA National Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
Playing without Danielle Slonac, who is on a study abroad trip to the Czech Republic as part of her participation in the Vitito Global Business Leadership Institute, the Cardinals are incorporating different doubles pairings on the trip. SVSU dropped two close 8-6 decisions at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. The tandem of Shea Donahue and Taylor McLauglin won their court, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
The Cardinals regrouped and rallied in singles, sweeping all six courts. Senior Izabella Ismailova won a hard-fought match at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Senior Ana Pico Garcia won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while junior Donahue claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
McLaughlin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, continuing her strong play. Fellow freshman Maddie Miller recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles, and junior Abby Shonk completed the sweep at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0.
With two wins to start their spring trip, the Cardinals return to action Thursday, March 9 as they battle the University of Minnesota-Moorhead.
