2015-16: A Great YEAR to be a Cardinal

UNIVERSITY CENTER - Looking back on the academic year that was 2015-16, there was much to be proud of in Cardinal Country in relation to Saginaw Valley State University Athletics. The year kicked-off with a strong fall as the volleyball and men's soccer programs advancing to the national tournament and the men's cross country team fell just a single place shy of qualifying for the national championships.

Volleyball - The volleyball squad competed in its fourth-ever NCAA Division II tournament in 2015, where it fell in the opening round to Rockhurst. The program posted 22 victories, marking just the fifth time in the 36 years of history the team has surpassed the 20-win plateau. Senior libero Brooke Tiller was named the GLIAC Libero of the Year and earned second team all-midwest region honors.

Men's Soccer - The Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament for the fourth time in five years after another solid regular season. SVSU posted a 2-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis in the opening round of the tournament before falling by a 3-1 mark to Northwood University. Both Tyler Channell and Jordan Kalk earned all-american honors for their play in 2015.

Men's Cross Country - The men's sixth place finish at the 2016 regionals was the best showing from the program since the 2009 season. The youth-laden team will look to improve during the 2016 season and qualify for the national championships.

Men's Basketball - The 2015-16 men's basketball team tied a school record with 25 victories en route to the fourth-ever GLIAC championship and first-ever Midwest Regional championship. That regional title advanced the Cardinals to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

Women's Basketball - The Lady Cardinals had a year to remember, advancing to NCAA Division II tournament play for just the second time in the history of the program and notching the team's second-ever victory in the tournament with a victory over Bellarmine University. SVSU was led by
