Six Swimming & Diving Student-Athletes Earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors

NORFOLK, Va. - Six Saginaw Valley State University swimming & diving student-athletes earned Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) one week after the SVSU women were named as a Scholar All-America team by the CSCAA. Shaun Yap and Amanda Thielen were named to their respective Scholar All-America team while Peter Lin, Alexandra Davis, Lydia Mattar and Kathleen Murphy earned Scholar All-America Honorable Mention plaudits.

To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.  Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at their respective diving qualifying meets.

Yap competed in the 200 breaststroke at the 2016 NCAA Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors after his 13th place finish. He is the first-ever men's swimmer to score points at the national championships. He maintained a 3.562 GPA for the winter semester. 

Thielen earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as well, placing 15th in the 100 yard backstroke at this year's championships. She is the first women's swimmer to compete in a finals of an event at the national championships. Amanda posted a 3.675 GPA for the winter. 

Lin posted NCAA "B" qualifying times in both the 500 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle. He had times of 4:33.68 and 16:03.05, respectively, in those events. He has a GPA of 4.0 in the classroom. 

Davis's NCAA "B" qualifying time came in the 500 freestyle. She posted a mark of 5:06.10 in that event. Alex posted a 4.0 GPA this past winter. 

Mattar racked-up a pair of NCAA "B" qualifying times. She notched a time of 1:04.57 in the 100 breaststroke and had a time of 2:19.53 in the 200 breaststroke. Lydia continues to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA overall and had that for the winter semester. 

Murphy competed in the NCAA Dive-in Meet for the second consecutive year and placed 15th on the three meter board. She had a score of 247.10 and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the diving championships. She posted a 3.792 GPA for this past semester.
