Indianapolis, IND. - SVSU's swimming and diving team completed the 2016 NCAA Championships this Saturday, March 12, hosted in the Indiana University Natatorium. After the fourth day of competition, the men placed 29th overall with nine points and the women placed 37th with four.
In the men's 200 yard breaststroke, Shaun Yap took 13th in the consolation finals and marked a new program record of 1:59.58. He earned Honorable Mention All American and is the first men's swimmer in program history to score points in an individual swimming event at the NCAA Championships.
Amanda Thielen finished 18th in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.50. Rebeca Martinez followed in 22nd, posting a time of 2:04.67.
Max Buxton finished 17th in the 3 meter diving, posting a program record of 391.25.
March 11 Results:
Amanda Thielen placed 15th in the 100 yard backstroke in the consolation heat finals with a time of 56.91. She is the first SVSU women swimmer to compete in a NCAA Championship swimming finals and the first swimmer to earn Honorable Mention All American.
In the men's 100 yard backstroke prelims, Shaun Yap finished 20th with a time of 55.25.
March 10 Results:
Max Buxton posted a 12th place finish in the 1 meter diving event, putting SVSU on the board at the NCAA Championships in the first year of the men's program.
His score of 434.95 points is a new program record and earned him Honorable Mention All-American.
March 9 Results:
Wilhelmina Francisco competed in the 3 meter diving event and set a new program 11 dive record with 426.65 points which was also a personal best. She finished 15th in the event and scored the first ever points in the women's program history at the NCAA Championships (2) and earned NCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
Rebeca Martinez took 27th in 200 yard IM prelims with a time of 2:07.43.
Amanda Thielen finished 31st in the 1,000 yard freestyle prelims, posting a time of 10:42.64.
