WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - The SVSU swimming & diving team finished the second day of competition at the 2016 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday (Feb. 11). The Cardinal women remain in fourth place after increasing their point total to 204, 40 behind third-place Northern Michigan. The men improved one position to sixth place with 140.5 points. That puts them just behind fifth place Findlay (154).
Rebeca Martinez highlighted the second day of competition for the Cards, posting a runner-up finish in the 400 Yard IM finals. She swam to a time of 4:24.72, marking a new program record. Lydia Mattar competed in the same finals of the race, finishing fifth with a time of 4:33.04. Martinez's time was an NCAA B qualifying mark.
The women's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team finished in sixth place of the finals, as Melanie Soenksen, Melissa Flannigan, Chelsea Harmon and Alexandra Davis combined for a time of 1:39.05.
The men's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay squad came in at seventh place, as Shaun Yap, Grayson Arnold, Michael Spears and Dalton Pokley combined for a 1:26.23 showing in the finals.
In the women's 200 Yard Freestyle finals, Taylor Grashius placed eighth with a time of 1:55.83. Teammates Davis (1:55.43) and Amanda Thielen (1:55.24) finished 12th and 11th, respectively, in the same event but in the consolation final.
The men's 200 Yard Freestyle race saw Peter Lin place 10th and Tanner Peltier 12th in the consolation final, notching times of 1:41.78 and 1:42.74, respectively.
Max Buxton finished seventh in the One Meter diving event, compiling a point total of 358.90.
In the women's 400 Yard Medley Relay, Thielen, Mattar, Martinez and Grashuis posted a fifth place finish with a time of 3:54.31.
The men came out in sixth place in the same event, with Lin, Yap, Pokley and Peltier touching the board with a mark of 3:23.55.
The Cardinals return to the pool Friday (Feb. 12), with preliminaries once again beginning at 10:00 a.m.. Swimming finals will be held at 5:30 p.m. while the women's one meter diving prelims begin at 2:15 p.m.
