University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team hosted its annual Red vs. White Spring Game on Saturday (Apr. 18) at Wickes Stadium. With strong defense on both ends, the Red Team was able to pull out a victory over the White Squad by a score of 9-7.
Team Red was the first to get on the board, with a 30-yard field goal splitting the uprights from Tyler Marcus at the 10-minute mark to make the score 3-0. The White team responded later in the quarter when quarterback Brad Odeman Jr. connected with wide receiver Sean Wren for a 48-yard touchdown. Alex Kenrick completed the extra point attempt to make the score leaving the first quarter 7-3.
The second quarter started much like the first, with the Red offense making its way into White territory, where Marcus once again was good on a field goal, this time from a distance of 46 yards. Team White was unable to generate much offense in the second quarter but held on to their 7-6 lead going into halftime.
A couple minutes into the third quarter, White attempted to put themselves on the board once again beginning with a 20-yard run from Odeman, however they were stopped when Matt Mccoy from Red intercepted the ball at the 25-yard line with 4:24 left in the quarter. Later in the third, Red was able to force another turnover from White, this time with Brad Tabor intercepting a pass at the 26-yard line to keep the score at 7-6 going into the final quarter.
Offense in the fourth was limited to another made kick from Marcus, this time from 25 yards out, which gave his team the lead with seven minutes left and the win by a score of 9-7.
The game wraps-up the spring practice season for SVSU, which will commence for its fall practices in August in preparation for the upcoming 2015 season.
