MIDLAND - The SVSU women's tennis team concluded their 2014-15 season with an impressive 7-2 win over Davenport University Sunday, March 29 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Cardinals finished the campaign with five straight team victories, including a win over nationally-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic.
The Cardinals opened by winning two of three doubles matches. In her final collegiate match, senior Meghan Woody teamed with freshman Lauren Sharp to win at no. 2 doubles, 8-6. Freshmen Shea Donahue and Danielle Slonac also won at no. 3 doubles, 8-4. Junior Erin Doud and sophomore Izabella Ismailova lost a heartbreaker at no. 1 doubles, 9-8 (4).
In singles play, freshman Abigail Shonk captured the first point, defeating her no.6 singles opponent 6-3, 6-2. Ismailova followed in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the no. 1 position. Sharp then won the deciding point in the team match, 6-2, 6-3 at no. 5 singles.
Drama continued in the individual matches. In the final match left on court, Donahue rallied in the third set to win the final three games of the no. 4 singles match to finish victorious 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Doud also picked up an impressive no. 3 singles victory 6-4, 6-1. Woody battled in her match, but came up short, falling 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-10 in the no. 2 position.
"This match was representative of the progress our team has made over the course of the season," said head coach Jenn Boehm. "We fought hard against a tough opponent and pulled out some great individual performances."
It was an emotional match for Woody and Boehm. Woody was the first recruit to commit to the program after Boehm took over.
"I am especially proud of Meghan, who played in her final match today," Boehm said. "She has been a driving force on this team for four years, and has really helped shape the team we are today. We are really going to miss her on the team, and we wish her well as she finishes her degree in business."
