ASHLAND, Ohio - The SVSU women's tennis team traveled to the State of Ohio for the first part of a weekend swing through the state, taking on the Ashland University Eagles on Saturday (Oct. 3) afternoon.
After rolling to a trio of victories in doubles play, the Cardinals continued the fine play through doubles and posted a sweep over the Eagles with a 9-0 showing on the road to improve to 4-3 overall on the season with the same mark in conference play.
Doubles
- Erin Doud and Ana Pico claimed a victory after posting a 7-5 tiebreaker victory over their opponents, sealing the 9-8 win.
- Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac won their match at the #2 doubles position, claiming an 8-3 victory.
- At #3 doubles, Abigail Shonk and Shea Donahue cruised to an 8-1 win to send the Cards to singles leading, 3-0.
Singles
- After a back-and-forth first set, Ismailova closed-out a straight sets win at #1 singles by scores of 7-6, 6-1.
- Pico posted straight set wins of 6-1, 6-1 at the #2 singles position
- Donahue claimed victory in #3 singles play with scores of 6-3, 6-2.
- Doud played at #4 singles against the Eagles, securing the victory after a 6-1 first set win, dropping set two 7-6 and closing the contest out with a 10-4 win in the third frame.
- Shonk played in #5 singles (6-1, 6-0) and Slonac #6 singles (6-0, 6-0) and both cruised to convincing victories.
- Mikayla Kazdan also competed in exhibition action, defeating three different Ashland players 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, respectively.

"What a great overall team performance today. We have spent so much time on developing our mental game and it really showed today. This is the most confident I have ever seen our team and we have positioned ourselves to really make a big jump in the standings this year. To have a winning record after 7 matches is big for us and really shows how much we have improved. We are excited to put it on the line again tomorrow against Walsh."
Up Next for SVSU
The Cardinals play at Walsh University on Sunday (Oct. 4) in a 10:00 a.m. matchup. The Cavaliers are 3-4 overall and 3-4 in GLIAC play and are coming off an 8-1 loss at Northwood University on Saturday.
