Tennis Claims First Victory with 6-3 Decision Over Huskies

HOUGHTON - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team got its first victory of the 2014-15 season after posting a 6-3 win over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Friday afternoon (9/18).

The Cardinals got things going in doubles play, as SV was victorious in the second and third slots by posting 8-3 and 8-1 wins, respectively.

Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac were the winning duo at #2 doubles while Shea Donahue and Lauren Sharp were the top tandem at #3 doubles.

Michigan Tech responded with victories at the #1 and #2 singles positions, as their top singles player, Kwang Suthijindawong, still remains unbeated for her career in GLIAC play.  Those two wins put the Huskies up 3-2.

SVSU would finish strong, however, as the #3 through #6 singles matches all went in favor of the Cardinals for the 6-3 win.

Meghan Woody started things at #3 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win and that would be followed-up by Donahue's 6-1, 6-1 victory at the #4 singles position.  Abigail Shonk closed-out her opponent at #5 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-0 and Sharp won at #6 singles by a mark of 6-0, 6-0.

"It feels great to see this group of ladies earn a win together," said Head Coach Jenn Boehm.  "It was a total team effort in doubles and singles.  We didn't play our best tennis but still found a way to win. I am a proud coach!"

With the victory, Saginaw Valley improves to 1-4 overall on the season and 1-4 in the GLIAC.  Tech falls to 1-5 overall with the same mark in league play.  The Cardinals play at Lake Superior State Saturday (9/20) in a 10:00 am match-up.
