The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. The Cardinals will take on the Ohio Dominican University Panthers in the Midwest Regional Quarterfinal Round. The game will be played on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Somers, Wisconsin on Friday (11/14) at 1:00 pm ET.
The winner will advance to the Midwest Regional Semfinal Round and face the top-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers on Sunday (11/16) at 1:00 pm ET.
Saginaw Valley enters as the #5 seed in the Midwest Region and carry an overall record of 10-3-3 into the tournament. The Lady Cardinals qualified as the #4 seed in the GLIAC Tournament but lost to Ashland in the quarterfinal round. Sophomore goalkeeper Claire Spleth was named the 2014 GLIAC Women's Soccer "Goalkeeper of the Year." She has played every minute between the posts for SVSU and is allowing 0.84 goals a game. Spleth has recorded eight shutouts in 16 games. The Cardinals are led offensively by sophomore Ashley Henderson who has a team-high eight goals this year.
Ohio Dominican has an overall record of 15-4-1 and enters the tournament as the #4 seed in the Midwest Region. It is the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history for the Panthers. ODU claimed their first regular season GLIAC championship and advanced to the 2014 GLIAC Tournament Championship game, but fell to Grand Valley 2-1. ODU is led offensively by GLIAC "Freshman of the Year," Ashley Blake. Blake has scored 10 goals in 20 games.
Friday will be the second meeting between the schools this year. The Cardinals and Panthers played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime on September 28th in Columbus, Ohio.
