MIDLAND - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team had to adjust to a slightly different home court setting on Friday afternoon, as the team moved its match against the Ashland University Eagles to the Midland Community Tennis Center due to inclement weather.
That slight change did not seem to affect the ladies on Friday afternoon (10/3), as the team won its third-straight team match by claiming an 8-1 victory over the Eagles.
SVSU got its first clean sweep of the season after doubles, leading 3-0 heading into singles play.
The duo of Erin Doud and Meghan Woody posted an 8-5 win at #1 doubles while Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac proved to be too much for Ashland's #2 doubles team, winning 8-2. Shea Donahue and Lauren Sharp rounded-out doubles play with an 8-3 decision in the #3 doubles slot.
That success carried right over into singles play for Saginaw Valley. Ismailova disposed of her opponent at #1 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Woody won at #3 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Donahue claimed victory at #4 singles 6-1, 6-3. Abigail Shonk (6-0, 6-2) and Lauren Sharp (6-0, 6-0) finished the scoring for the Cardinals with victories at #5 and #6 singles, respectively. Doud battled strong in #2 singles, but would eventually fall by a 6-3, 6-1 count.
"This was an important match for us and was a total team effort," said SVSU Head Coach Jenn Boehm. "All seven starters earned a point and everyone stayed focused on their game plan. We feel good about a third consecutive win, but we have a lot of work ahead of us with Walsh and Ohio Dominican this weekend. We're ready for the challenge."
With the victory on Friday, the Cardinals improve to 3-4 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC while the Eagles fall to 0-10 overall and 0-9 in league play. SVSU plays Walsh University Saturday morning at 10:00 am. The match will once again be played at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
