INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional championships this weekend (Sept. 27-29) at the University of Indianapolis.
Singles
Grabbing a win in round one of A singles was freshman
Izabella Ismailova (Almaty, Kazkhstan / Military College of Sport), who defeated her Davis and Elkins opponent, 6-1, 7-5. She also went on to win her next two matches by scores of 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-4. However, in her semifinal match Ismailova fell to #3 ranked opponenet Natalia Kozel of Drury 6-2, 6-2.
Ismailova defeated the tournament's #14 and #5 ranked players in her three wins on the weekend.
Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) was unable to pick up a round one win in A singles, dropping the match 6-1 6-1. Doud did have success in the consolation bracket, however, reaching the quarterfinal round before falling 6-4, 6-1.
Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) also competed in A singles, but were unable to capitalize in a tough first round falling 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0, repectively. Both would go on to win rounds one and two in consolation, but eventually fell in round three.
In the B singles draw,
Ashley Giordano (Alpena, Mich. / Alpena HS) picked up a round one win 6-1, 6-4 and went on to win round two as well, 6-1, 6-0. She eventually fell in the quarterfinal round on a tie breaker 0-6, 6-0, 1-0.
Also picking up a round one win in B singles was Laurene Majani (Lille, France / Hautes Etudes d'Ingenieur), who defeated her opponent 7-6, 6-3 but then went on to round two and was narrowly outscored in a tie breaker 6-0 1-6, 1-0.
Hannah Wittock (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing HS) fell in round one of B singles in a close match, 3-6, 6-7, 1-0 and again in the first round of the consolation bracket, 6-3 6-1.
Doubles
In A doubles action, the SVSU team of
Charlotte Wong and Meghan Woody were able to move past round one due to a forfeit from the other team, and were then unable to finish in round two, dropping the contest to their Michigan Tech opponents 8-2.
Izabella Ismailova and
Erin Doud also picked up a round one win by a score of 8-5, but were beaten in round two by the #2 ranked duo from Wayne State, 8-4.
In B doubles play, the duo of Laurene Majani and
Ashley Giordano were successful in a 9-7 win in round one, but later fell in round two 8-2.
The Cardinals will return to action Saturday (Oct. 5) when they face Wayne State at home in a
GLIAC match set to begin at 10:00 AM.
