ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team extended its spring winning streak to three matches with a day three sweep in Orlando, Fla. The Lady Cards knocked off Bellarmine 5-4 in their first match before setting back Montana State-Billings, 8-1, in match two.
Match One vs. Bellarmine
Saginaw Valley got off to a great start today, winning two of their three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, the team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS), took their match by a score of 8-2. Grabbing the second point of the day was No. 3 doubles duo Kassie Van Alst (Cadillac, Mich.) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS), who won their match, 8-4.
The Cardinals also started well in singles with Shangguan picking up a win in No. 1 singles, coming from behind to defeat her opponent, 0-6, 7-5, 6-0. Doud continued her strong play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles, while Van Alst picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
Match Two vs. Montana State-Billings
The Cardinals would continue their strong play in match two, beating Montana State-Billings 8-1.
The Cardinals got off to a quick start today in doubles play, taking all three matches for a 3-0 advantage. Leading Saginaw Valley would be the team of Shangguan and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) in No. 1 doubles, shutting down their opponents, 8-1. In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) and Doud were also victorious by an 8-1 count. Sean Potter (Cadillac, Mich.) and Van Alst would go on to defeat their opponents by a score of 8-4.
Saginaw Valley kept the momentum on their side in singles play as they were led by Doud who cruised to victory in her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Shangguan also went on to win her No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-2. Woody would be near perfect at No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-1, while Van Alst was strong at No. 6 singles defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-0.
The Cardinals are now 13-9 overall on the season and will get Thursday off before finishing their spring trip out on Friday against Presbyterian at 3:30 PM.
