UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team had a big win today (Sept. 8) defeating Malone University by a score of 8-1.
The Cardinals got off to a quick start today in doubles play as they took all three matches for a 3-0 advantage. Leading Saginaw Valley would be the team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) in No. 1 doubles, shutting out their opponents, 8-0.
In No. 2 doubles, the duo of sophomore Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and freshman Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS), also defeated their opponents by a score of 8-3. Posting the No. 3 doubles win by a score of 8-2, was the team of Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High).
Saginaw Valley kept the momentum on their side in singles play as they were led by freshman Close who cruised to victory in her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) also went on to win her No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-0, as well as Shangguan who recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles.
Helping her team in No. 5 singles was Doud, winning 6-0, 6-3. The final 6-3, 6-3 win of the day went to Wong in No. 4 singles.
Also fighting hard battles for the Cardinals were Woody in No. 2 singles who fell to her opponent 6-3, 7-6 in a closely contested match and freshman Sean Potter (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac HS) who dropped her exhibition tilt by an 8-6 final.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Pioneers fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC.
The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 9) for a 10:00 AM home match against the Lake Erie Storm.
