Cardinals Battle at ITA Regionals

JENISON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional championships today (Sept. 21) at Jenison High School.

Singles
   
Grabbing a win in round one of the main draw was senior Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS), who defeated her Ohio Dominican opponent, 6-1, 6-0.  Unfortunately in her next match she fell just short in a hard fought battle against Stefanie Monsch of Drury University, dropping 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.
 
Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) also picked up a first round win in the 'A' draw, overcoming Lindsey White of Southern Indiana by a score of 6-3, 6-2.   In round two, it was Kali Phillips of Grand Valley that came out on top, edging out Close 6-2, 6-0.
 
The third 'A' win in round one for the Cardinals came from Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS), taking down Karysn Betts of Rockhurst University in a tight match, 7-6, 6-1.   In the second round, Woody was outdone by Susie Alcaraz of Northwood University, dropping her match 6-0, 6-2.
 
Freshman Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) also competed in the main draw, but fell to Erika Sullivan of Ashland University by a score of 6-1, 6-0.  Doud, however, went on to win her match in the consolation bracket against Chanel Deschamps of Drury University, 6-1, 6-3.
   
In the 'B' singles draw, Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) dropped her opening round match only to bounce back for the victory in her first consolation match against Carli Biesi from William Jewell in straight sets. Sean Potter (Cadillac, Mich.) fell twice, once in the opening round and again in the consolation bracket.
   
Doubles

In doubles action, the SVSU team of Erin Doud and Meghan Woody defeated the Grand Valley duo of Lexi Rice and Katelyn Schaffer by an 8-4 tally, moving on to the round 16 in the main draw. Doud and Woody then overwhelmed their opponents from Southern Indiana by a 8-2 final as they advance into the quarterfinal round. Erin and Meghan were eliminated in their quarterfinal matchup by the No. 1-seeded Lewis, 8-2.
   
Also moving on to the second round in the main draw was the talented team of Kelli Close and Yunjiao Shangguan who closed out their Drury opponents by a final of 8-2. Close and Shangguan then went on to defeat the No. 5-seeded team from Ohio Dominican, 8-3, as they too moved into the quarterfinal round. Kelli and Yunjiao saw their tournament come to an end on Saturday as they fell 8-2 to Northwood.
 
In the 'B' doubles draw, the team of Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) and Sean Potter received a first round bye and then fell by an 8-2 tally.
 
The remainder of the consolation brackets was cancelled due to inclement weather as the tournament was moved indoors.
