SAGINAW, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's
and women's cross country and track and field teams volunteered at
the 5th Annual Michigan CardioVascular Institute
Foundation (MCVI) and YMCA of Saginaw "Run for Your Heart"
Community Races on Saturday, September 8 in downtown Saginaw.
The "Run for Your Heart" Community Races benefit the Michigan
CardioVascular Institute Foundation. The MCVI Foundation strives to
create a community that is heart-healthy and vibrant by championing
causes related to the education, prevention and treatment of
cardiac-related diseases.
"We had a really exciting time helping out with the races," said
sophomore cross country student-athlete Drew Meylan.
"It was nice to go out and be active in the community."
Approximately 70 SVSU cross country and track and field
student-athletes spent a portion of their Saturday helping the 723
race participants around Saginaw's Ojibway Island. The event
consisted of a 10k run, 5k run and walk, a one-mile fun run, tot
trot and a USAT&F half marathon.
"Being a part of something positive for the second consecutive
year was not only beneficial to our student-athletes, but also to
the Saginaw community," said assistant coach Tony Filipek.
The student-athletes passed out water, directed runners and
cheered with cowbells, receiving many smiles and "thank-you's" from
the MCVI race participants.
"We had a great time and were able to interact with many
individuals within the community," commented Filipek. "We cannot
wait for round three next year!"
Through the Michigan CardioVascular Institute Foundation,
patient care is taken one step further and the staff is dedicated
to developing, promoting and supporting educational and community
initiatives that empower people of all ages to live and lead
healthier lives.
