DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell to Wayne State University 9-0 today (Oct. 6). The Cardinals fall to 6-5 overall and in the GLIAC while Wayne State improves to 8-1 overall and in the conference.
Senior Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) fought tough in the her No. 5 singles match before ultimately falling in a close second set, 6-2, 7-5. In No. 6 singles, Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) battled but was unable come away with the victory, dropping 6-4 6-2.
The Cardinals No. 2 doubles team made up of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich.) battled the Warrior's the entire match but were also outdone by their opponent, 9-8.
Senior Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) also fell in No. 1 singles by a 6-3, 6-3 decision. Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) teamed up with Shangguan in No. 1 doubles but dropped the match 8-4.
Freshman Sean Potter (Cadillac, Mich.) was victorious in her exhibition tilt over Wayne State's Lisa Thomas with an 8-4 tally.
The SVSU tennis team will return to action tomorrow (Oct. 7) as they visit Hillsdale College in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference match at 2:00 pm.
