MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team had a successful senior day today (Oct. 20) by defeating Davenport University, 6-3. With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 9-6 overall and 8-6 in the GLIAC while Davenport University falls to 2-3 overall.
The Cardinals were led off by Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) and Kelli Close (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) in No. 1 doubles who grabbed an 8-4 victory. Right behind them was the team of Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow HS) in No. 2 doubles who defeated their Davenport opponents 8-1.
Saginaw Valley also faired well in their singles play today, with Erin Doud picking up a win in No. 5 singles, 6-3 6-0. Senior Yunjiao Shangguan was successful in No. 1 singles as well, defeating her Davenport opponent 6-3, 6-3. Also picking up her second point of the day was Kelli Close who won 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 in a tough No. 3 singles match. Woody had a good outing today as well, winning her No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
Saginaw Valley recognized the careers of three seniors on senior day: Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich. / Bay City Western HS), Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) and Yunjiao Shangguan.
The Cardinals will return to action this Friday (Oct. 26) to compete in the GLIAC Tennis Tournament. SVSU will face Wayne State in the first round starting at 6:45 PM at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
