UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- The Saginaw Valley State University football team hosted its annual Spring Game today (April 16). The Red Team came out victorious by a score of 21-0.
The Red Team scored its first touchdown with 2:47 remaining in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) completed a 64-yard pass to wide receiver Jeff Janis (Tawas City, Mich./Tawas Area HS).
With under a minute remaining in the first half of action, the Red Team expanded its lead on a 26-yard pass, as Jennings found an open Mike Peterson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) in the end zone for another score. The White Team would get a first down as freshman quarterback Jesse Siwek (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area HS) found an open Robert Essex (Saginaw, Mich./Carrollton HS), but would not be able to reach the end zone as the Red Team entered halftime with a 14-0 advantage.
Defensive lineman Ryan Busch (Holton, Mich./Holton HS) picked up a sack just two minutes into the second half on a third down, however a scoreless third quarter would keep the Red Team's two touchdown lead over the White Team. The Red Team would extend its lead on a hand-off to junior defensive end Brandon Williams (Flint, Mich./Kearsley HS) with 3:29 remaining in the game and went onto victory, 21-0.
The Cardinal football team will open their 2011 season on September 10th as they host the Bulldogs of Ferris State University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Saginaw Valley is promoting a "Red Out" for all Cardinal fans in attendance.
