Cardinals Move Closer to GLIAC Tournament with 7-2 win over Chargers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team moved one win closer to a GLIAC Tournament appearance with their 7-2 win against Hillsdale College today (Oct. 13).  The Cardinals will travel to Tiffin for an afternoon match with the Dragons on Friday, the winner will clinch the eighth and final spot in the next weekends GLIAC Tennis Tournament.

The Cardinals would take two of the three matches in the doubles, with the teams of Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) and Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich./Bay City Western HS) picking up a 8-2 win at no. 2 doubles.  The tandom of Bobbi Enos (Almont, Mich./Almont HS) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) would also pick up an 8-2 win at no. 3 doubles.

Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China Shiyang HS) would win a three set thriller at no. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-8.  Wong would pick a point at no. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Enos would add another point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at no. 4 singles.  Frederick won a hard fought match at no. 5, 7-5, 6-3, while Piorkowski would come away with a win at no. 6, 6-2, 6-2.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 3-7 overall on the season and 3-7 in the GLIAC, while the Chargers fall to 3-12 overall and 2-10 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will travel to Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 14) before returning home for a match against Lake Erie on Saturday to close out their fall season.
