SAULT STE MARIE, Mich - The Saginaw Valley
State University softball team defeated Lake Superior State
University 11-0 and 13-7 today (Apr. 30) to snap a four game losing
streak in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
GAME ONE
Saginaw Valley would take controll of game one in the top of the
third inning when Lauren Memmer
(White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland HS)singled to lead off the inning,
after two stolen base she would score the games first run on an
error that allowed Ashley Coffin
(Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stephenson HS) to reach base. Ashley Jordan
(Freeland, Mich.) would single in Coffin to give the Cardinals a
2-0 advantage.
SVSU would add three more runs in the fourth inning with the
help of three Lake Superior errors to make the score 5-0. The
Cardinals would add six runs in the top of the fifth with the help
of five hits and three LSSU errors. The big play of the
inning came off the bat of Kimberly Sills (Clinton Twp., Mich. /
Chippewa Valley HS) who tripled in two runs to help the
Cardinals move the game into run rule contention.
GAME TWO
Saginaw Valley picked up where it left off in game one scoring five
runs on six hits to take commad of game two. Jordan would
double home Jess McKieth and Billi Hoeppner
(Hemlock, Mich.) to get scoring started and Coffin would double
later in the inning to drive Angela
Kaiser (Waterford, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lake
HS).
The Cardinals would add one more run in the second inning when
Kaiser circled the bases on an error by the left fielder to
give SVSU a 6-0 advantage. LSSU would strike back in the top
of the third with three runs, but that would be immediately
answered by SVSU in the bottom of the third as they put two more
runs on the board as McKeith and Memmer both scored on a series of
Lake Superior errors to help put the Cardinals up 8-3.
SVSU would keep the bats going in the bottom of the fourth
inning, adding four runs on four hits. Jenna Holmes
(Jenison, Mich.) doubled in the first run and would score later in
the inning on a Memmer single. A Hoeppner single would score
Memmer to make the score 12-3 SVSU.
The Lakers would add three runs in the top of the fifth and
another in the top of the sixth to cut the Cardinals advantage to
12-7. SVSU would add its last run in the bottom of the sixth
on a Kalie
Burdick (Milford, Mich.) single that score Monica
Gathright (Baroda, Mich. / KVCC).
With the wins SVSU improves to 25-12 on the season and 12-10 in
the GLIAC, while Lake Superior State falls to 10-36 overall and
5-19 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on
Saturday (May 1) against Northwood University, first game will
start at 1:00 PM.
