ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State
University women's tennis team defeated St. Francis (March
8), 6-3, as it traveled to Orlando, Florida for its spring trip
this week.
In singles competition, freshman Yunjiao Shanngguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) defeated
Daniella Emola (St. Francis) 6-0 and 6-1. Sophomore Debra
Hammond (Goodrich, Mich.) earned a victory, defeating Corinne
Lintz (St. Francis) 6-1 and 6-3 while junior Courtney Heileman (East China, Mich. / St. Clair HS)
bested Agnus Belza (St. Francis) 6-2 and 6-1. Senior Jessica
Stone (Flushing, Mich.) beat Carla Bram (St. Francis) in three,
2-6, 6-0 and 6-3.
The Cardinals nearly swept St. Francis in the doubles
competition, as pairs Hammond and Shangguan defeated St.
Francis' duo, 8-1 while SVSU's Heileman and Stone swept
St. Francis, 8-0.
With the victory, Saginaw Valley moves to 2-8 overall on the
season. The Cardinal tennis team will return to action today
(March 9) when they take on Florida Institute of Technology.
