Tennis Splits Pair Over The Weekend

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team went 1-1 this past weekend in a pair of non-league match-ups.  The Cardinals lost a 5-4 decision to Alma College on Saturday (Mar. 20) before rebounding for a 5-4 win over Aquinas College on Sunday (Mar. 21).  The split puts SVSU at 4-12 overall on the season.

In the match with Alma, the only doubles victory came with the no. 1 team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) and Debra Hammond (Goodrich, Mich.) defeating Alma's Amy Baranowski and Kelsey Erwin by a score of 8-2.  Shangguan and Hammond would take care of their singles opponents as well, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.  Jessica Stone (Flushing, Mich.) claimed the only other victory of the day, winning in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 7-6) over Alma's Jen Meloche.

Shangguan and Hammond would take the doubles match against Aquinas, 8-0.  Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich./St. Clair HS) and Stone teamed-up for a 9-8 (3) victory in no. 2 doubles. In singles play, Shangguan would win 6-2, 6-0 while Hammond claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory.  Heilman also won at no. 3 singles, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-0.

The Cardinals will face Davenport University in their final match of the season on Sunday, Mar. 28 at Potential Energy in Saginaw, Mich.
