UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University football team picked up its third victory of the
2010 season today (Oct. 16) in a 24-20 win over the University of
Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference
(GLIAC) contest. SVSU has defeated the Greyhounds 18 of the
last 19 meetings.
The Greyhounds lit the scoreboard first on a 23-yard pass
completion into the endzone, taking a 7-0 lead within five minutes
of play in the first quarter. The Cardinals responded as
freshman quarterback Jonathon
Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) found junior
wide receiver Nick Gallina
(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) from 18 yards out to even the score at
seven.
UINDY's offense came out strong in the second quarter, adding
their second touchdown of the game at the 12:10 mark, however the
high energy Saginaw Valley offense would march down the field as
"Meijer Player of the Game", junior runningback Ronnie Lark (Flint,
Mich./Powers Catholic HS) found paydirt on a four-yard plunge to
even the score at 14-14.
The Cardinals would find themselves in great field position
after an eight-yard Greyhound punt, however would be unable to find
the endzone, setting up a successful 20-yard field goal off the
foot of sophomore kicker Thomas
Goodroe (Byron, Mich./Byron HS) to give Saginaw Valley their
first lead of the game, 17-14 entering the lockeroom at
halftime.
In a scoreless third quarter, the Cardinals found themselves on
the five-yard line to start the fourth quarter as Jennings added
his first rushing touchdown of the season. Jennings would
finish the game completing 8-of-15 passes and picking up 31 rushing
yards on 18 carries. The Greyhounds found the endzone with
5:07 remaining in the game, however it was not enough as Saginaw
Valley went onto victory, 24-20.
The Cardinal defense was led by senior linebacker Wayne Sanders
(Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) who ended the game with 10
tackles and broke-up one Greyhound pass while seniors Joshua Fulton
(Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka HS) and Ja'Vae Ingraham
(Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson HS) both added seven tackles each;
Ingraham also picked up one interception for 44 yards and had two
pass break-ups. Sophomore devensive back Jeffrey Heath
(Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) ended the afternoon with six
tackles and two fumble recoveries for the Cardinals.
Offensively, Saginaw Valley was led overall by Lark who posted
120 yards on 20 carries and had one reception for eight yards with
one score while junior runningback Brandon Hayes
(Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) added 41 yards on 10 carries and
ended the afternoon with one reception for six yards. Gallina
would finish the game with two receptions for 25 yards and one
touchdown.
With the win, Saginaw Valley moves to 3-4 overall on the season
and 3-3 in the GLIAC while UINDY falls to 3-4 overall on the season
and 2-4 in conference play. The Cardinals will return to
action next Saturday (Oct. 23) as they travel to take on the Eagles
of Ashland University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
