UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University women's tennis team defeated the University of
Findlay today (Oct. 10), 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match up. The victory moves the
Cardinal's overall record to 4-6 on the season and 4-6 in the GLIAC
while the Oilers fall to 5-8 overall on the season and 2-7 in
conference action.
The no. 1 doubles team of sophomore Yunjiao
Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) and freshman Andrea Calhoun
(Midland, Mich.) defeated their Oiler opponent 8-0 while freshman
Stephanie
Bagnell ( Brookside, Nova-Scotia/Cobequid Educational Center)
and senior Cortney Heileman
(East China, Mich./St. Clair HS) were victorious in no. 2 doubles,
defeating Kelsey Yoder and Holly Vietzke of Findlay 8-1. The
team of freshmen Hailey Crampton
(Vernan, British Columbia/WL Seaton) and Charlotte Wong
(Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) were
successful in no. 3 doubles, defeating their Oiler opponent
8-0.
The Cardinals showed dominance in singles as Shangguan defeated
Findlay's Haley Dudon 6-2, 6-1 in no. 1 singles while Calhoun
conquered Oiler Gina Solis 7-5, 6-4 in no. 2 singles. Bagnell
was successful in no. 3 singles, defeating Yoder 6-4, 6-4 while
Heileman defeated Vietzke 6-1, 6-2 in no. 4 singles. Crampton
swept her Oiler opponent, Amanda Mills in no. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0
while Wong was victorious over Findlay's Beverly Beavers 6-0,
6-1.
Saginaw Valley will return to action next week (Oct. 19) as they
travel to Allendale, Mich. to take on GLIAC rival Grand Valley
State University (11-0). The match is scheduled for noon.
