UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State
University softball team split its double header today (Apr. 14)
against Northwood University with scores of 1-4 and 5-4.
GAME ONE
Saginaw Valley would have runners in scoring position throughout
the game but would not be able to put any runs up on the board for
the first six innings.
The Cardinals would leave two runners in scoring position in the
fourth innings and three runners in scoring position in the fifth
inning.
Junior Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes HS)
would score the only run for Saginaw Valley with a solo home run in
the top of the seventh, her second of the season.
Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich. / Byron HS) would take the loss for the
Cardinals throwing seven innings and allowing four runs on allowing
five hits.
GAME TWO
The Cardinals would get behind in the third inning when Northwood
would score three runs. The Timberwolves lead would increase to
five runs in the fifth inning but the Saginaw Valley would not give
up.
Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich. / Freeland HS) would start things
off for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth inning with a
single through the left side of the field. Kaiser would step into
the box with one out and drive a double, scoring Jordan. Kaiser
would advance to third on the throw home to try and prevent Jordan
from scoring. With two outs, Kaiser would go home on a pass ball by
the Timberwolves catcher. Stacy Kraatz (Howeell, Mich. / Hartland
HS) would single up the middle and that would bring up Jessica
Anhel (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) who would walk. Nicole Fick
(Columbiaville, Mich. / Lapeer West HS) singled to right field
scoring Hoeppner and advancing Anhel to third. Sarah Sheffer
(Waterliet, Mich. / Kalamazoo Valley CC) was walked giving the
Cardinals two outs with bases loaded. Jillian Peterson (Freeland
Mich. / Freeland HS) stepped up and drove a hit up the middle to
score two runs.
Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind. / Central HS) would start and pitch
five innings for the Cardinals striking out three. Fulton would
come in on the mound for Saginaw Valley in the top of the fifth
striking out two. Bowlby would increase her record to 7-1 and
Fulton would pick up her fifth save of the season.
With the split Saginaw Valley is 28-8 overall on the season and
15-3 in the GLIAC, while Northwood moves to 13-19 overall on the
season and 7-11 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action
on Thursday (Apr. 16) when they host Grand Valley. First pitch is
scheduled for 3:30 PM.
