Cardinals Salvage Split on Day three of Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team managed a split on day three (Mar. 9) of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. SVSU dropped their first game to Palm Beach Atlantic by a score of 3-1 before beating Southern Indiana by the same score.

The Cardinals struggled to get anything going early against Palm Beach Atlantic falling behind 3-0 in the first six innings before being able to string a series of plays together to more a runner across the plate after Jessica Anhel(Oxford, Mich.) was hit by pitch that gave the Cardinals a late life. Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) would then lay down a perfect bunt to advance her over to second before Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) ripped a hit right back up the middle to drive in the Cardinals only run of the game. Stacy Kraatz (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) started in the circle for the Cardinals going five innings allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three batters before being lifted for left-handed pitcher Megan Samassa (Holly, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic HS) who threw the final inning allowing no runs and striking out one.

The Cardinals wasted little time in game two getting the offense going as Marsha Beaubien (Alpena, Mich.) laced a one out doubled to left center field to set the table for Kraatz who ripped and opposite field home run, giving the Cardinals an early 2-0 advantage after one inning. Kraatz would strike again in the third inning when she crushed her second home run (3) of the game to left center to give SVSU starting pitcher Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) a three run cushion. Fulton (2-1) would throw six strong innings allowing one run, while scattering six hits and striking out six hitters. Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind./Central HS) would come in and pick up the save in the seventh inning.

SVSU is now 3-3 overall on the season and will play Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State on Tuesday at Fulton Field as they continue play at the Rebel Spring Games.
