Tennis Starts off Trip with 8-1 Victory

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team took to the court on Monday (Mar. 9) for the first time of the spring season and dominated the University of Saint Francis by a score of 8-1.

In 1 singles senior Katie Hanover (St. John's, Mich./St. John's HS) defeated Corinne Lutz 6-1, 6-2 to give the Cardinals a great start in their singles action. 2 singles Debra Hammond (Grand Blanc, Mich. /Grand Blanc HS) then defeated Beth Frey by scores of 6-1, 6-0 to keep things moving for SVSU. Sophomore Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich./St. Clair HS) playing at 3 singles easily finished off Emily Zajda (SF) 6-0, 6-0 to give Saginaw Valley their third victory in singles action.

4 singles Danielle Coldren (West Bloomfield, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) would keep things moving for the Cardinals as she defeated Danielle Emola 6-0, 6-1 in straight sets. Jessica Stone (Flushing, Mich. /Flushing HS) playing at the 5 singles spot defeated Agnes Belza 6-4, 7-5 6 and Cardinal newcomer Jessica Jones (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage HS) defeated Carla Braun 7-5, 6-1 to help Saginaw Valley sweep the singles action against St. Francis.
The team of Coldren and Hanover defeated Frey and Emola 8-3 at one doubles, while team 2. Hammond and Stone finished off Braun and Zajda by a score of 8-3. The Cardinals only set back on day one would come when Heileman and Natalie Schifer (Frankenmuth, Mich.) fell to the team of Lutz and Koziol, 8-6.

Saginaw Valley will be in action again when they take on the St. Ambrose in Orlando, Florida.
