UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University Athletics finished second in the GLIAC Presidents' Trophy standings for the fifth-consecutive year after totaling 110.5 points. The Cardinal men's teams finished with 52 points to place second in the standings, while the women's teams totaled 58.5 points for fourth.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and support staff on SVSU's fifth-consecutive second-place finish in the GLIAC Presidents' Trophy all-sports standings," SVSU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics John Lewandowski said. "Our across the board success and consistency in performance validate SVSU's championship culture. Everyone associated with our programs has embraced our commitment to clearly establishing daily standards of excellence.
"SVSU competes in the nation's premier Division II conference, and it continues to emerge as a destination for elite student-athletes, who desire to pursue excellence in the classroom, in competition and in community outreach."
SVSU trailed winner Grand Valley State by just three points after a very successful fall season that had women's cross country pick up a season-best nine points. Men's cross country totaled eight points, women's soccer scored 7.5 points, and men's soccer scored seven points after claiming another GLIAC regular-season title.
The gap between first and second place widened in the winter and spring, but SVSU scored well in both men's and women's indoor track and field with 15 total points (men's team 7, women's team 8).
The spring was highlighted by softball earning its third-straight GLIAC regular-season championship and fifth-straight GLIAC Tournament title and earning eight points. Men's and women's track and field added 14 points (seven for each team).
The five-year streak matches the longest streak in program history when the Cardinals were second from 1982-86, and it is the 11th time SVSU has finished second in the standings overall.
