UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Baseball team finished the weekend on a high note on Sunday, handing the No. 15 Ashland Eagles their first GLIAC loss of the season with an 11-3 victory at the SVSU Baseball Complex. Saginaw Valley pounded 17 hits in the contest while defeating the Eagles.
The Cards responded to an Ashland run with an RBI single from Adam Turner in the bottom of the 2nd, knotting the score at 1-1.
Five runs would follow the next inning as SVSU grabbed the lead and made the score 6-1. Craig Wilson had an RBI infield single, Seth Stratton had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk, Austin Koin added a two-RBI single and Andrew Burke followed suit with one of his own.
After the Eagles added a run in the 6th to make the count 9-2, the Cardinals tacked-on two in the bottom on a Riggs RBI fielder's choice and an RBI bunt single from Wilson.
Two more came in the 7th, pushing the lead out to 11-2 when Winters ripped an RBI single and Jordan Swiss added one of the same.
The final run came on a solo home run from Ashland in the top of the 9th, finishing the game at the 11-3 score and the Saginaw Valley victory.
Wilson went 3-5 in the game with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Winters added three hits as well with a double, RBI and three runs. Derrek Clyde added two hits and two runs, Austin Koin had two knocks and a pair of RBI and Burke had two hits with an RBI and run. Stratton added two hits with an RBI and run as well.
Kyle Henigan (4-1) got the start and notched the victory for the Cards. He tossed 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits, walking three and posting three strikeouts. He allowed two runs (1 ER). Tyler Stambaugh, Chase Gearing and Swiss combined to go the rest of the way in relief, allowing just a single run on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals remain at home on Tuesday (Apr. 9), hosting Hillsdale College in a regional matchup. First pitch will be 3:35 p.m. at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
