Shaun Yap - Swimming & Diving

Shaun Yap (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/Taylor's University) performed well this past weekend at the GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships for the Cardinals, finishing fourth or better in several events.  

Yap notched a third-place finish for SVSU on Wednesday night competing in the 200 Yard Medley Relay 'A' Final, posting a time of 1:31.31. He would then compete in two more relay events for SVSU on Thursday, as the Cardinals finished in fourth place in both the 200 Yard Free and 400 Yard Medley. Shaun returned to the medal stage on Friday with his second place performance in the 'A' Final of the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 54.87. He concluded the weekend with a fourth-place showing in the 200 Yard Breaststroke 'A' Final, posting a time of 2:00.55. 

The Saginaw Valley State Swimming & Diving team will host a last chance qualifier on Feb. 18 before heading to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2016-17 NCAA Championships. Competition from the CrossPlex will run all day from Mar. 7 to 10.

Lydia Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) gave the Cardinals its first-ever victory in any Breaststroke event, capping a dominant performance in the pool this past weekend at the GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships. 

Mattar began the weekend competing in the 'A' Final of the 200 Yard IM for SVSU, finishing in 4th place in the event. She would return later that evening to swim the second leg of the 200 Yard Medley relay, where SVSU took a 4th place result. On Thursday, Mattar notched a second place finish in the 400 Yard IM 'A' Final for the Cardinals while taking third place result in the 400 Yard Medley relay later that night. Lydia raced in the 100 Yard Breaststroke on Friday for SVSU and finished in third place. 

Finally, Mattar completed the weekend by qualifying for the 'A' Final of the 200 Yard Breaststroke, where she notched the school's first-ever victory in the event. She took the first-place finish with a time of 2:15.09 to cap a truly dominant performance for the Cardinals.
