SVSU Breast Cancer Survivor and Recognition Event

February 18, 2017

SVSU Athletics hosted the 9th annual breast cancer survivor reception and recognition event on February 18, 2017 in coordination with a home basketball double header contest during the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Pink Wave week. Twenty-eight breast cancer survivors and their families came to the campus of SVSU to celebrate a journey of courage, hope and faith.

Commemorative t-shirts, miscellaneous other promotional items were sold for a profit of $3,639 which will be donated to St. Mary's of Michigan Seton Cancer Institute Breast Care Fund. To date, SVSU Athletics has raised just over $30,000 for regional community members in need of breast care services.

This event was made possible by the generous contributions of our Cardinal student-athlete volunteers and sponsors, including: Saginaw Radiotherapy Associates, Dr. Ernie and Leanne Balcueva and family, Catholic Federal Credit Union and Mitchell Motorcoach. Additional support was provided by Your Healthy Balance, donating a massage to every survivor and Cardinal Deli, providing the reception for all survivors and volunteers.

Save the date for next year's event, as the 10th annual event is tentatively scheduled to be held on February 10, 2018. For more information or to register, contact SVSU Athletics Community Engagement office at 989/964-2562 or e-mail us at
